State Emission Inspection

Vehicles newer than 25 years old, that are gas powered falling into the categories of car or light-duty truck and are registered in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding or Rockdale County, must be emissions tested. Vehicles must be inspected each year before the registration can be renewed. The Three most recent model years and any vehicle 25 years old or older are exempt.

Purchasing a Vehicle

When purchasing a used vehicle, it is the seller’s responsibility to see that the vehicle has a passing grade on its inspection before the car may be sold in one of the covered counties. However, the seller is not required to provide the buyer a hard copy of the VIR information.

If purchasing a vehicle from outside a covered area, the buyer has 30 days after the vehicle is registered in the covered county to provide proof of a passed emissions test.

Where to get a Vehicle Tested

Your vehicle can be inspected at different locations based on the age of the vehicle. Newer vehicles (made post 1996) can be tested at any station. Look for an inspection station sign that reads “1996 or Newer Vehicles Welcome” or “All Vehicles Welcome.” Vehicles 1995 and older must be tested at stations marked “All Vehicles Welcome.”
